Junior Sailing Lessons

The Junior Sailing Program at Hudson Yacht Club has got it all for aspiring young sailors! Our enthusiastic staff of instructors and coaches is to teach and inspire your kids, in a program for all sailing levels.

We are committed to accommodate the growing demand we have experienced in the Junior Sailing Program. Our priority remains the safety of the children, as well as providing well-maintained equipment, knowledgeable instructors and quality instruction in a friendly and fun environment!

The programs are based on the Sail Canada “CanSail” Program. This competency based program provides safe and standardized instruction for recreation and competition in sailing dinghies. Students are instructed in sailing theory, sailing technique and care and maintenance of the boats. Priority is given to on-water practice of these skills.

Eligibility

Programs are available to anyone between the ages of 6 and 18. Non-members of HYC may register after April 15th, 2016. Space in the program is limited in order to ensure the safety of the children and the quality of instruction.

CanSail 1 & 2

CanSail 1 is the introductory level for Sail Canada based certification. Beginners are introduced to and taught the basic skills of sailing in Squadron 13’s, (3-4 sailors per boat). These levels cover safety, seamanship and boat handling in light to medium wind.

In CanSail 2, sailors continue to develop those sames skills while beginning to understand the technical aspects of the boat as well as the common safety precautions sailors take. Upon completion of CanSail 2, the student will be able to sail competently with confidence in nearly all wind conditions. Sailors are now ready fro the thrill of Cansail 3 & 4!

CanSail 3 & 4

At this level, sailors develop their skills further to improve their boat speed and handling through tuning and maintenance. The students will also learn the fundamentals of racing. They will get a shot at competitive racing in 420’s at local regattas. After completing their CanSail 4 they are encouraged to continue on to CanSail 5 & 6.

Opti Learn to Sail

The best sailors in the world started on the OPTI class! This program offers the chance to complete levels CanSail 1 & 2 in a singlehanded boat.
