HYC offers a full racing program for a wide range of boats and sailing abilities.
We are always looking for new people to join the fun, either as crew or with their own boats.
Racing sailboats can be tremendously exciting and, with the fleet gathering in the bar after the race, it’s extremely sociable too.
PHRF/ONE DESIGN SERIES
Thursday Evenings and one Saturday a Month
This is the fleet for the more serious racers. Racing in this fleet requires your boat be in good repair, that your crew be reasonably experienced and that you have a working knowledge of the Rules of Racing. Most boats will fly spinnakers during the race.
Whether you race one design or PHRF, there is a competitive fleet that will challenge you and your team. Roll your sails after racing and head to the gazebo for the weekly BBQ and then the bar for Sailor’s happy hour.
Beginning May and stretching through to the Fall, the Hudson Yacht Club and its members host this series with a starting signal at 7pm on Thursdays (6:30pm in September) and 12 noon on Saturdays. Saturday races are schedule one afternoon per month in May, June and August – three races each day.
Included in the Senior Sailing Series on Thursday night at HYC is the Lake of Two Mountains series which invites clubs from all over the lake to compete over a series of races to determine the Lake of Two Mountains fleet champions.
WHITE SAIL SERIES
This has proven to be a popular fleet for those learning to race without the complexities of a spinnaker. Every Tuesday night, the Hudson Yacht Club invites its members out for a PHRF /One design white sail race starting at 7pm. A friendly atmosphere makes the white sail racing a perfect place to get your feet wet for the beginner looking to improve, or the seasoned sailor looking to refine their skills.
The long tradition of dinghy sailing at HYC lives on with its scheduled Saturday series. All types of dinghies are welcome to 3 races hosted by the club with a 12 o’clock starting signal. Dinghy races are scheduled for one Saturday in June and one in July.
Monday and Thursday Afternoons
The soling 1 meter radio controlled sailboat is a one-design boat build from a kit, each built as closely as possible to the specific design. These boats are sailed just like any full size competitive sail boat. All of the tactics, sail and rigging adjustments and setting apply just as they apply to full size boats. They handle extremely well in most wind conditions.
Boasting an impressive number of races every year, it’s no wonder the Soling fleet has been gaining popularity at HYC. Hosting several high profile events has put the HYC Soling fleet on the map as a destination for many remote controlled sailing enthusiasts. Racing takes place twice weekly with a start time of 1:30PM on Mondays and Thursdays off of the T-Pier. A custom built platform makes launching and retrieving your boat a breeze.
Saturday or Sunday Afternoons
Through the season, HYC hosts a number of special events each year. The Jack Howlett Memorial race is sailed in July. Also in July, one Saturday afternoon has been set aside for team racing. In August, Match Racing is planned for another Saturday afternoon. For the past couple of years, we’ve had our 3 Peaks Challenge scheduled on a Sunday afternoon in August that combines sailing, swimming, cycling, and running – and event unique to HYC.
Race Committee is an extremely important part of making racing SAFE, FAIR, and FUN.
It’s also a great way to learn more about racing and improve you own understanding
of the course, signals, starts, finishes, and scoring.
In the tradition of HYC, we ask that all boats that race regularly help with Race Committee during the year.
